NORTH Perth could, within two years, boast more public open space along Fitzgerald Street.

The City of Vincent will spend $250,000 to develop and implement a plan to establish a new public space in the North Perth Town Centre.
The motion, put forward by Mayor John Carey and councillor Emma Cole, was passed at the City’s July 26 council meeting.
It is envisioned the space would be between Angove Street and Alma Road with the potential to create an adjacent shared space for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists.

 

The space would be “safe, flexible and adaptable to encourage its use and enjoyment by the community for a variety of different purposes”.
Community consultation will start before January next year.
Mr Carey announced intentions to revegetate pockets of the town centre on July 12 after unveiling a makeover given to a “dingy and grungy” unused pocket of land on Angove Street.

Cr Cole said North Perth was one of the most rapidly growing areas within the City of Vincent.
“(Public open space) has been identified as something that is needed in the North Perth town centre,” she said.
“We will look at all opportunities and then go to the community to see what they think as well.”
She said this year would consist of investigating options, then taking action next year.

Cr Cole said digging up concrete to replace it with greenery would also be an option.
She said it was North Perth’s turn for a makeover.

“Leederville is looking great,” she said. “We’ve got Mary Street Piazza happening on Beaufort Street, Mt Hawthorn is chugging along with little things emerging all the time, but it’s North Perth’s turn,” she said.
